Toronto, Vancouver and Calgary are the world’s top cities for long-term real estate investment, a report by Grosvenor’s research said this week.Grosvernor, an international property development company based in the U.K., ranks 50 of the world’s cities on their resilience, measured by their vulnerability and how well they can cope with adverse events.“The resiliency of the Calgary real estate market really is based upon net migration," said Calgary realtor Matt Verity."The job growth we have here, our resource sector, it needs so many people and we don't have the people here to do it and we're talking about not just net migration from other Canadian cities, we're talking about from the world at large.” The three Canadian cities beat out some American competitors, including Chicago — which came fourth. The Grosvenor report says Canadian cities fare high because they're well governed and well planned. The report states interesting facts from the research showing:
  • Canadian cities are most resilient when compared to the rest of the world.
  • Despite the capacity to bounce back, American cities are relatively vulnerable.
  • Cities ranked 11 to 30 are fairly close to the top 10 in their scores which deems them to be fairly resilient. Most European cities fit into this cluster.
  • The weakest 20 cities are in emerging markets. Volatile or erratic economic growth has not garnered the quality and long term resilience of these cities.
